CLAGS: The Center for LGBTQ Studies

CLAGS: The Center for LGBTQ Studies provides intellectual leadership in addressing issues that affect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals and other sexual and gender minorities. As the first university-based LGBTQ research center in the United States, CLAGS nurtures cutting-edge scholarship, organizes events for examining and affirming LGBTQ lives, and fosters network-building among academics, artists, activists, policy makers, and community members.

A DIFFERENT LEGACY


To advance our public mission of making and sharing queer knowledge, CLAGS is launching A DIFFERENT LEGACY, our 2023-26 development campaign. Driven by our belief that LGBTQ Studies is for everyone, CLAGS will bring free, accessible events, education, and resources to audiences throughout New York City and across the world. A DIFFERENT LEGACY will raise $500,000 in the next three years to:

  • Develop innovative programming and conferences. CLAGS' 2023-26 programming arc weaves together two major speaker series, "Queer of Color/Trans of Color Conversations" and "Queer-Class Relations." Each series will culminate in a major academic/community conference, in the spring of 2025 and the spring of 2026 respectively.
  • Launch the CLAGS Research Archive. Housed at the Mina Rees Library and accessible to all interested individuals, the CLAGS Research Archive will make available decades of CLAGS’ material history including CLAGSNews; hundreds of hours of newly digitized video and audio recordings of lectures and panels; programs, posters, and ephemera from major conferences; oral histories with former executive directors; and organizational files.
  • Invest in the next generation of queer and transgender studies scholars. CLAGS will fund annual fellowships and awards, including the CLAGS Fellowship for an LGBTQ book in progress, the Sylvia Rivera Award in Transgender Studies, the Graduate and Undergraduate Student Paper Awards, the Scholar-in-Residence Fellowship, and the José Esteban Muñoz Award.
